Approximately half of the top-tier of the legal word processing industry is going through an outsourcing phase. While duplicating/fax and mailroom departments were outsourced for the most part in the 1990's, the trend to outsource the Word Processing departments of large legal firms has been steadily picking up steam for the last 10 years. In the New York Area, for instance, companies such as Williams Lea, RR Donnelly and Novitex are three that come to mind. Existing staff still on the company payroll, are usually laid off. Many have spent a lifetime at a particular firm and hoped to retire there. Their generic skills have eroded due to exclusive use of 3rd Party Software. Either way, most of the people who need training fall into 3 categories: 1. The person who has been out of the industry for a number of years and needs a real refresher to get up to speed. 2. The person who has been temping but has a lot of holes in their knowledge base and therefore is having trouble passing agency tests. 3. The person who has a permanent position but they are rusty with their generic MS Word skills and would fail most agency tests and law firm tests that involve the testing of generic MS Word skills rather than in-house 3rd party software. Besides our background as instructors, we have spent thousands of hours on all three shifts as Coordinator, Help Desk, IT Personnel and Lead Operators.
